Chapter 7: A Multitude of Styles

Introduction
As we saw in Chapter 6, rock music went mainstream in the 1970s, becoming a massive industry built on a commercially successful model. At the same time, a multitude of new divergent styles sprung up. This fragmentation of rock music into a wide variety of sub genres was a major trend from 1970 to the end of the century.
This chapter will cover that variety of music. Listening to the songs while reading about them will help make it come alive. See if you can detect influences of the styles we have covered in previous chapters and try to come up with your own words to describe them. Continue to note the influence of African American musical traditions when we get to disco and funk artists, and the pop star Michael Jackson.
